Relatives we spoke with told us that staff were caring and reliable. People were supported to take part in activities which suited their interest and hobbies. Staff were aware of their roles and responsibilities for people’s care. The registered manager had systems in place to review the service and to ensure the service responded to ongoing needs of people. It includes all 11,500 registered care homes in the UK that cater exclusively or primarily for older people. There is no charge whatsoever to appear in it, and we welcome a photo and descriptive text to enhance the presentation of your home.

Staff responded to body language of people who were without verbal communication. We have recently been able to open EAC Advice, a new 'housing options' advice service for older people. As with hotels, the cost of living in a care home varies widely according to its location, the size of your room or suite, and the facilities on offer.
– there are some services which we can’t rate, while some might be under appeal from the provider. Suspended ratings are being reviewed by us and will be published soon. Our infection prevention and control inspections look at how well people using a service are kept safe from the spread of infections. We found that the safety of the premises were adequately monitored and maintained and the care environment was suitable to meet people’s needs and keep people safe. We saw there were systems in place to ensure staff were suitably trained and supported to meet people’s needs.

Housing-with-care developments run by housing associations and local authorities tend to be called ‘extra care’ or ‘independent living’ schemes, and explicitly seek to accommodate people who need daily help. Willowcroft is a registered Care home for Mental Health Conditions, which require more complex healthcare needs that can seriously affect daily living and quality of life. At Willowcroft we offer a warm and friendly welcome, with cosy and inviting lounges and communal spaces. We encourage residents to bring in their own personal belongings including small furniture to help make the environment feel as homely as possible. We use this background to create supportive and enabling environments that preserve each resident’s sense of identity in a way that feels right for them.
Some care homes are registered to provide personal care only, for example help with washing, dressing and giving medication. Others also provide nursing, and will have a nurse on duty twenty-four hours a day. We found evidence that people’s views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided. People we spoke with told us that they enjoyed living at the home and felt safe living there. They told us that the home provided a range of interesting and stimulating activities, whilst encouraging people’s independence. One person told us "I'd give it five stars, I think it’s excellent".

Our observations showed that staff offered people a choice in how they spent their day. During our inspection visit we observed that staff were friendly and approachable. They spent time sitting with people to offer them comfort or stimulation. We observed staff delivering care which met people’s individual needs and which supported them in a respectful and appropriate way. This site offers providers of services, accommodation and related advice a free opportunity to advertise what you do. The site’s 4 million visitors a year comprise roughly 45% older people, 45% younger family and relatives, and 10% professionals who work with older people.
There is often a substantial difference between fees charged to those who can afford the costs themselves and those who receive help from their Local Authority. A majority of homes aim to cater for both, but some target only one or the other. Willowcroft have purchased a cooker, which is located on the mental health unit to help encourage residents to prepare and cook their own meals with staff guidance. We focus on a person’s key strengths, helping resident’s live active and fulfilling lives. Residents experiencing dementia can have difficulty communicating, which in turn can lead to a sense of isolation. Our teams are there to help find ways in which they can re-engage with their families, friends and the community as a whole.

Daily help, including personal care, is available on site and one or more meals are available daily in a dining room or restaurant. Additional facilities are also common – for example hairdressing salons, hobby rooms and gyms. Organised activities will focus on helping residents maintain their health and wellbeing. Housing-with-care is a recent but natural evolution of retirement housing to provide an environment capable of enabling older people to maintain their independence even if they become physically or mentally frail. Every registered care provider in the UK can claim a free listing on Autumna. However, a paid subscription allows more information to be added and as a result a higher profile score.
Another person told us “I can’t fault the place, to me it's what I would do if I was at home, the staff are most helpful". We provide person centred care and support with a focus on outcomes to achieve ‘self-defined recovery’ that considers how each person wants to live within the context of their mental health condition. We team up with case workers, social workers, family members to work with residents to reach their goals.

The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. It monitors and inspects services, to make sure they are safe, effective and provide high-quality care.
The profile score is a measure of how much information has been provided. – the service isn't performing as well as it should and we have told the service how it must improve. Staff received health and safety training which related to the needs of the people receiving support. Some people using the service and staff felt that the current staffing levels did not ensure that there were sufficient staff available to meet people’s individual needs. The activity co-ordinator told us they worked on all four units within the service. Some people were doing jigsaws and the activity co-ordinator was manicuring people’s nails.
This may involve personalising a room or filling a memory box, whatever it takes to make the move to a new home as smooth as possible for residents and their loved ones. They need to share our values and respect people, their life experience and personal choices.
